Chord Sequence in Harmonic Movement

This example illustrate why chord sequence in harmonic movement matters:

  1. If you go from the top line to the bottom line, the chord sequence is G major to C major to F major. These are called fifth progressions, down (counting backward from the first chord root to the next one in the progression).

    This is a fifth down chord progression:

    G – C – F

  2. If you go from the bottom line to the top line, the chord sequence is F major to C major to G major. These are fifth progressions, up (counting forward from the first chord root to the next one).

    This is a fifth up chord progression, and sounds completely different:

    F – C – G
