Major and Minor Scales, Major and Minor Keys: The Basic Rules

You can start any major or minor scale on any of the 12 different notes of the chromatic scale. But the rule is, whichever note you start on, you have to maintain the major scale interval order, which is (yet again):

Tone order of major musical scale showing order of tones and semitones.

even if that means you sometimes have to use a whole bunch of sharp or flat notes. Which is the case for some keys.

And, not surprisingly, all of this applies equally to the minor keys. You can start any minor scale on any of the 12 different notes of the chromatic scale.

That means you can play in 12 different minor keys.

Again, the rule is, whichever note you start on, you then have to maintain the minor scale interval order, which is (yet again):

Tone order of minor musical scale showing order of tones and semitones.

even if that means you sometimes have to use a whole bunch of sharp and flat notes. Which is the case for some keys.
